2018 Camp Chance, July 9–13
Thanks to everyone who has supported us for 19 years!
This summer marked our 19th year with 111 campers and one of our largest on record! We extend a special thanks to everyone who supports Camp Chance, helping to provide an experience for kids whose families are not ordinarily able to afford expensive residential summer camps.
Under Rebecca’s watch…
• Moved to Walker Creek Ranch
• Grew in camper size (111 kids this past summer)
• Launched the CIT program and hired counselors to keep kids involved
• Added a mental health component
• Nearly tripled fundraising efforts
…and much more!
We are taking this opportunity to inform you that Rebecca Kuga, LMFT, LPCC, and program supervisor of the San Rafael Police Youth Services Bureau will be retiring on February 4, 2019 after 12+ years of service.
The Youth Services Bureau (YSB) was founded in 1978 by a San Rafael Police juvenile crimes detective.
Realizing there was a need for mental health services, the department hired a licensed psychotherapist to run the YSB, and the duties included clinical supervision of graduate students and post-graduate interns.
Rebecca was the second YSB supervisor and she helped create a legacy of dozens of licensed psychotherapists who were trained and mentored here. In addition, hundreds of clients have had their lives changed for the better as a result of the many programs offered by the YSB, including youth diversion intervention, free/low cost mental health services, Parent Project classes, and of course, Camp Chance.
Upon Rebecca’s retirement, the YSB as we know it will change. The San Rafael Police Department will continue offering Parent Project classes and the opportunity for at risk youth to participate in Camp Chance.
We will also transition to a youth diversion program used by many other police agencies in Marin County.
We and our Camp Chance partner, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, will work to bring Cops and Kids
Together in July of 2019 for a smaller number of children than the 111 we were able to host this year.
With the retirement of Rebecca, we will not be hosting our Winemakers Dinner, our number one fundraiser.
We continue to rely on the generous support we have received from all of you over the years to fund Camp Chance in 2019 and beyond. We hope that you can once again send a generous donation to fund our 20th year of this magical program.
The San Rafael Police Department is proud of all that has been accomplished by the YSB in service to our community and wishes Rebecca all the best in her retirement.
Thanks to Rebecca, and everyone who supports Camp Chance!
